Location: Between Mariposa Park and S. 25th Avenue
Description: Soon, getting from Mariposa Community Park to the Laurel Woods neighborhood just west of it will be easier than ever. A raised causeway is planned to bridge the natural area that often floods, creating a direct walking route for people on the west side of the Laurel Woods Subdivision to Mariposa Park. Once finished, this causeway will complete an approximately 1-mile walking path along the southern boundary of Laurel Woods.
The Mariposa Community Park Causeway includes the construction of 400 LF of a concrete pedestrian pathway, approximately 290 LF of a steel pedestrian causeway, and vegetation restoration. The causeway will be constructed with weathered steel. Weathered steel is a special type of steel designed to rust in a controlled way. When it's exposed to the weather (rain, sun, air), it starts to rust, just like regular steel. But, this rust forms a very dense outer layer, almost like a protective skin. Weathered steel has a unique, reddish-brown, rustic look and its very low maintenance because the protective rust layer eliminates the need for painting.

Current Status: On March 19, 2025, the City of Cornelius opened bids for the Mariposa Community Park Causeway. The low bidder for the project was Capture Energy, Inc. of Portland, Oregon. The City is proceeding with awarding the project to Capture Energy, Inc. Construction is anticipated to begin in late spring 2025 and be completed by early fall 2025.

The sidewalk project includes pervious concrete sidewalks, on the south side of N. Davis St., between N. 10TH and 11TH Ave., and the east side of N. 11th Ave., from N. Davis to N. Clark, along with associated ADA ramps. It also includes narrowing Davis Street between 10th and 11th.
Check back for updates.
Location: Various locations in the southern part of Cornelius; Intersection of S. 8th Avenue and S. Fawn Street, S. Fawn Street between 8th and 10th Avenue, and S. Cherry Street from 12th to 16th Avenue. See map below.
Description: Annually, the City of Cornelius repairs and replaces pavement throughout the city. This year’s pavement replacement includes In-Place Cement Treated Base (ICTB). ICTB is a week-long process that has five major steps. In-Place Cement Treated Base (ICTB) is the process of pulverizing and blending the roadway rock base and existing soils with cement to provide a solid foundation for the asphalt pavement. For several hours during the blending process, traffic on the roadway will be limited. We will communicate with residents throughout the entire ICTB process and provide notification when activities that limit traffic are scheduled.
Included with the pavement repairs is the replacement of several existing curb cuts to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and provide accessibility to all.
Current Status: Paving is completed as of October 6th.

With development of the Laurel Woods neighborhood, traffic on the collector streets such as S. 20th and 26th, increased significantly. To deal with this increase, the city is proposing several traffic calming projects on 20th and 26th, as well as creating new street connections to Baseline (Hwy 8) from Laurel Woods.
The City hosted an Open House on November 18, 2025.
A continuation of the above meeting will be held at the Cornelius Public Library on March 10, 2026, at 5pm. Two specific projects will be discussed, S. 26th Ave/Beech St, and the 345th Railroad Crossing. The meeting will be presentation-style, and will include an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and speak with staff.

North 14th Avenue is the sole roadway connecting several hundred community members North of Davis Street between 13th and 15th Avenue to the rest of Cornelius. The condition of the pavement, which is a seriously failing, shows the wear of the high number of vehicles using the connection. The City of Cornelius is proceeding with engineering the design for the repair of the roadway, replacement of existing water mainlines, and the improvement of sidewalks in the area. A link to the 30% engineering plans is provided as follows: 13th & 14th Avenue Improvements.
In the summer of 2026, construction begins on the 13th, 14th and Fremont Improvements project to improve infrastructure in your neighborhood. The project includes:
- Reconstructing 14th between Davis and Fremont
- Improving and widening the sidewalk in this section of N. 14th
- Repaving Fremont from 14th to 15th
- Creating an access for emergency vehicles at 13th and the old railroad tracks
- Replacing corroded, undersized water mains on 13th and 14th between Davis and Fremont and on Fremont from 14th to 15th
- Improving the drainage at 14th and Fremont by constructing a new storm sewer on 14th from Fremont to Gray St.
If you have any questions or concerns about the project, please contact Kevin Oppenlander or the Cornelius Public Works Department at 503-357-3011.
