You may have noticed some freshly painted fire hydrants popping up around Cornelius! Our Public Works Department began this project last year with a goal to repaint all 480+ fire hydrants in the city by the end of 2027.
To manage such a large project, the work is being done in phases each year so crews can balance it with their other responsibilities and budgeted materials. This year alone, over 140 hydrants were painted along TV Highway, Adair Street, Baseline Street, and in several neighborhoods.
Why red? The bright color makes hydrants easy to spot during emergencies—and it gives them a fresh look, replacing the old paint that had started to peel.
