Message from the Mayor
This afternoon, September 12, 2025, Former City Councilor John Colgan submitted his resignation letter to the City Manager and me. In his resignation, he expressed that he is deeply sorry for his comments and the harm they caused to our community and staff. Effective immediately, he has resigned from City Council.
The comments made by Former City Councilor Colgan on social media do not reflect my values or the values of the City of Cornelius.
I am committed to fostering respectful dialogue and ensuring that every member of our community feels safe to share their views without fear of harm, intimidation, or retaliation.
Violence is never an acceptable response to differences in opinion or belief. I strongly condemn all acts of political violence and stand firmly against words or actions that could incite it.
Moving forward, my focus remains on rebuilding trust, strengthening our community, and ensuring that Cornelius continues to be a safe and welcoming place for all.

Mensaje del Alcalde
Esta tarde, 12 de Septiembre de 2025, el exconcejal John Colgan presentó su carta de renuncia al Gerente de la Ciudad y a mí. En su renuncia, expresó que lamenta profundamente sus comentarios y el daño que causaron a nuestra comunidad y al personal. Con efecto inmediato, ha renunciado del Consejo Municipal.
Los comentarios realizados por el exconcejal John Colgan en las redes sociales no reflejan mis valores ni los valores de la Ciudad de Cornelius.
Me comprometo a promover un diálogo respetuoso y a garantizar que todos los miembros de nuestra comunidad se sientan seguros para compartir sus opiniones sin temor a sufrir daños, intimidaciones o retaliaciones.
La violencia nunca es una respuesta aceptable a las diferencias de opinión o creencias. Condeno todos los actos de violencia política y me opongo firmemente a las palabras o acciones que puedan incitarla.
Mi objetivo sigue siendo reconstruir la confianza, fortalecer nuestra comunidad y garantizar que Cornelius siga siendo un lugar seguro y un lugar donde todos se sientan bienvenidos.

Message from the City of Cornelius to Our Community
The City of Cornelius has been made aware of recent comments made by a member of the City Council. These statements reflect the views of the individual and do not represent the City or the City Council as a whole.
As a city, we are committed to fostering an environment of respect, inclusion, and constructive dialogue. Our goal is to serve our community by providing a safe and welcoming space where all individuals are treated with dignity.
We will continue working collaboratively with staff, city council, and community members to address the needs of our residents and ensure the highest level of service.
In closing, we share a message recently expressed by our Mayor during a City Council meeting: “Of all the things you can be… Be kind.”

Mensaje de la Ciudad de Cornelius a nuestra comunidad
La Ciudad de Cornelius ha sido informado de los recientes comentarios realizados por un miembro del Concejo Municipal. Estas declaraciones reflejan las opiniones de la persona y no representan a la Ciudad ni al Concejo Municipal en su conjunto.
Como Ciudad, estamos comprometidos con cultivar un ambiente de respeto, inclusión y diálogo constructivo. Nuestro objetivo es servir a nuestra comunidad proporcionando un espacio seguro y acogedor donde todas las personas sean tratadas con dignidad.
Continuaremos trabajando en colaboración con el personal, el Concejo Municipal y los miembros de la comunidad para atender las necesidades de nuestros residentes y garantizar el más alto nivel de servicio.
Para terminar, compartimos un mensaje expresado recientemente por nuestro Alcalde durante una reunión del Consejo Municipal: "De todas las cosas que puedes ser... sé amable."
